ABOUT DR JASON HAWRELAK

Dr Jason Hawrelak has contributed to Chapter 6 – The Microbiome to Advanced Clinical Naturopathic Medicine.

Dr Jason Hawrelak is a researcher, educator, nutritionist, and naturopath with over 20 years’ clinical experience. He did his PhD examining the capacity of probiotics, prebiotics and herbal medicines to modify the GIT microbiota and teaches widely, both in Australia and internationally, on these topics.

He has published extensively (including 17 textbook chapters) and his research has been cited over 1100 times. Dr Hawrelak is on the Medical Nutrition Council of the American Society for Nutrition and is a Fellow of both the American College of Nutrition and the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia. He is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Australian Research Centre for Complementary and Integrative Medicine (ARCCIM) at the University of Technology Sydney (Sydney, Australia).

Dr Hawrelak has taught health professionals at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level for the past 20 years. He is currently the Senior Lecturer in Complementary and Alternative Medicines at the University of Tasmania’s College of Health and Medicine (Hobart, Tasmania), where he coordinates the Evidence-based Complementary Medicine programs and also teaches natural approaches to Gastroenterology within the University of Western States Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine program (Portland, Oregon). Additionally, Dr Hawrelak is Chief Research Officer at ProbioticAdvisor.com, which offers a searchable database that enables easy, evidence-based prescribing of probiotic products and online resources for clinicians, and health conscious members of the public, to learn more about the human microbiome and how they can positively influence these ecosystems.

ABOUT DR JOANNA HARNETT

Dr Joanna Harnett has contributed to Chapter 6 – The Microbiome to Advanced Clinical Naturopathic Medicine.

Dr Joanna Harnett was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in 2013, Thesis entitled ‘Investigating the role of intestinal microbiota in the aetiology, symptom scores and life quality of people living with coeliac disease’ (School of Health and Human Sciences) from Southern Cross University, Lismore, Australia and a Graduate Certificate Educational Studies (Higher Education) in 2015 from The University of Sydney, Australia. She holds a Master and, Bachelor of Health Science (Complementary Medicine) Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia and appointed as a Lecturer (Complementary Medicines) in the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine and Health at The University of Sydney in July 2014. Prior to her academic career she worked as a naturopath in an integrative medicine practice in Sydney’s north for 15 years.
