Varicose Veins

Many more women experience varicose veins than men and its not all related to high heels! Standing up all day especially on hard floors, sitting for long periods, crossing the legs and constipation can all impede proper blood flow to the legs. Once you have the varicosities treating them does take time so focussing on preventing new ones is of prime importance.

The most important foods are those containing bioflavonoids as they help to strengthen one’s veins. This includes cherries, berries (especially blackberries and blueberries), rosehip tea and the pith of citrus fruits. Its very important to encourage foods that stimulate circulation such as chilli, ginger, garlic and onions to keep blood flowing throughout the body. Nutrients such as Vitamin E and CoEnzyme Q10 can assist with circulation and supplemental Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids can strengthen and increase elasticity of the vein walls.

Exercise is essential to keep blood pumping through the legs and improve circulation. Daily exercise with whatever you enjoy the most is fantastic. A very useful yoga strategy to relieve symptoms is to lie on the floor with your legs up against the wall for 15 minutes at the end of the day. Make sure that your weight is optimal as any extra weight will aggravate and ensure that you address any constipation with adequate fibre, water and exercise as necessary to prevent unnecessary pressure and haemorrhoid formation.
